What Is GRP – Glass Reinforced Polyester?

GRP stands for Glass Reinforced Polyester — a tough, long-lasting material that’s been trusted for decades in demanding environments. It’s made by combining strong glass fibres with a special resin that hardens into a solid, waterproof layer.

You might not realise it, but GRP has been used since the mid-1900s in things that really need to stay watertight and durable — including boats, vehicle panels, storage tanks and industrial equipment. It’s known for being strong, weather-resistant and corrosion-proof, which is exactly why it has become so popular for flat roofs.

Today, GRP roofing is a reliable modern choice for homes across Leyland, Chorley and Preston, offering a smart appearance and long-term protection with very little maintenance.

What Is a GRP Roof?

A GRP roof is a seamless fibreglass roofing system that creates one solid, waterproof surface across your roof. There are no joints or seams where water can creep in, which makes it ideal for flat roofs on garages, extensions, porches and dormers.

At Paramount Roofing, we install GRP roofs using a proven step-by-step process

developed over more than 25 years of hands-on roofing experience.

How a GRP Roof Is Installed

A typical installation involves:

Fitting a strong timber deck (usually OSB3 boards) to form the base
Laying a fibreglass matting over the surface
Applying specialist resin to bond everything together
Installing pre-formed GRP edge trims for a neat, watertight finish
Adding a durable top coat in your chosen colour

The end result is a smooth, hard-wearing surface that won’t rot, rust or crack like some older roofing materials.

How Long Does a GRP Roof Last?

When installed correctly, a GRP roof can last 30 years or more with minimal upkeep. It handles the British weather extremely well and resists moss growth, UV damage and temperature changes.

That’s why many homeowners in Leyland, Chorley and Preston choose GRP when they want a flat roof that looks good and stands the test of time.
